Inner Strength for Troubling Times

Sundays, March 1-29

5:30-7:00 pm Central Time

Deb Mechler, Facilitator

Join the discussion during the Lenten season! This series will focus on the wisdom of Howard Thurman, whose influence on the leaders of the civil rights movement in the U.S. enabled them to act from a stance of spiritual strength. His remarkable life and teaching are well presented by Dr. Brown, whose book elicited high praise from contemporary progressive spiritual leaders.

“Brown walks with us through Thurman’s inimitable life and commitments as he summons us into centering down, encountering the natural world, paying attention to sacred synchronicity, unleashing inner authority, and recognizing the genius of the religion of Jesus. We learn from Thurman’s resilience in the psychologically terrorizing climate of the Jim Crow South, his encounters with Quakers and with Mahatma Gandhi, and his sense of being guided by the Spirit. Each chapter illuminates an aspect of Thurman’s work and includes reflection questions and spiritual practices.” (Quote from the publisher. Read more here.)

About the facilitator…I am a retired pastor and spiritual director whose current calling includes offering online discussions to help us through troubling times. I am also a musician, a mixed media artist, a grandmother and a crossword addict. I can be talked into almost anything if it involves pie.

Each session in this five-week series enables you to share your thoughts about the week’s reading as well as your own story. If you miss any sessions, I invite you to join when you can; it should still be worthwhile. Email me at dsmechler@gmail.com to sign up or if you have any questions.

Copies of the book may be obtained at Broadleaf Books, Amazon, Thriftbooks, Alibris, and other sellers.
